About the boat.
The boat as we know it now will not be used again. It was taken
out of service in the Autumn of 2009 for a complete interior
refit. We are planning to have Dick's Folly ready for service at
the beginning of 2011. This is going to take a considerable effort by the
Project team members, and the fund-raising team. Some of the
preparation work has already been done by members of the Project, but the
refit and mechanical work will be carried out by professionals.
The current boat.
Dick's Folly was purpose built to the design of the Project. The boat
accommodates a maximum of 12 passengers (see notes on accommodation
below for more details). She is a traditional built narrowboat, laid in
1987 and fitted out during 1988. Internally, the pine cladding provides
a warm and cosy atmosphere. It should be noted that the boat is not
designed for wheelchair use. However, we strive to cater for any other
disabilities, where we can do so in safety.
(Community boats with disabled facilities can be found through the
National
Community Boats Association.)
Equipment.
Dick's Folly is equipped to a high standard:
Hot and cold running water
Shower
Domestic cooker with oven, grill and four burners
4.7 cu. ft. refrigerator
2 chemical flush toilets with large holding tanks
12 volt electric lighting
240v lighting and power sockets.

Accommodation.
Self-steer groups:- accommodation provides for a maximum of 12
passengers including two crew (who are normally trained adult
leaders of the group).
Project provided crew:- accommodation for up to 12 passengers +
project crew. While accommodation is comfortable and adequate, space is
limited. All sleeping accommodation is in bunk beds. The four cabins are
separated by curtains.
Location and cruising.
See the map for the Project location.
Our base offers secure, off street parking for several vehicles for
those using the boat. The site has water, electricity, a barbeque and
rubbish disposal / recycling. Nearby are several pubs, a pizzeria, an
Indian restaurant, a garage and a shop.
The location provides an ideal mooring for the boat on the River Gade
at its junction with the Grand Union Canal at Hunton Bridge. |
